Heisman Race

(Left to right : Chase Daniel (Missouri), Tim Tebow (Florida), Darren McFadden (Arkansas), Colt Brennen (Hawii), Todd Reesing(Kansas) )

Heading into this weeks action my Heisman race is down to five guys. For Tebow, McFadden and either Reesing this will be there last chance to inpress as neither of the three will not be playing for a conference title. Brennen and Daniel will be playing next week giving voters one last chance. Tebow and McFadden took this opertunity and had huge games.

My Rankings after this week.

1. Tim Tebow: Last week he became the first player in NCAA history to rush and throw for 20 TD's in one season. This week he had a huge game against Florida State. This week: 19-28 for 262 yards and 3 TD's, 16 rushs for 86 yards and 2 TD's.

2. Darren McFadden: Had a huge game against a great defence and lead his unranked Arkansas Razorbacks to a triple overtime upset over number 1 LSU. McFadden is a favorite to go first in this years NFL draft. This week: 32 rushs for 205 yards and 3 TD's, 3 for 6 for 34 yards and 1 TD.

3. Chase Daniel: Has had an all around great year leading Missouri on offense and is a great leader. This weeks victory over Kansas showed just how good he is. This week: 40 for 49 for 361 and 3 TD's

4. Colt Brennen: His and his teams downfall all year has been its weak scheduale, but thats not Colts fault. He has been putting up redickulus numbers and has lead the Warriors to an unbeaten season thus far. His performance this week was nothing short of special beating a Boise State team that most experts pick to beat them. This week: 40 of 53 for 495 with 5 TD's and 2 Int's, 9 rushs for 18 yards and a TD.

5. Todd Ressing: Was having a vary good season but this week against Missouri all but kills his chances for the Heisman, as well as his teams bid for the National Championship game. This week: 28 for 49 for 349 with 2 TD's and 2 Int's, 6 rushs for 1 yard and a TD.

NCAA Football Top 25

After seeing Ohio State fall at home there is a new number 1 this week. Here are my rankings.

1. Oregon (8-1) - The Ducks spread offense lead by Dennis Dixon is the best in the nation, and they made some wins against tough teams look easy.

2. LSU (9-1) - Had wins on last possession but if they can win out, which they should, count them in the championship game.

3. Kansas (10-0) - The Jayhawks have a great offense and will have a real test in two weeks when Missouri is in town.

4. Oklahoma (9-1) - Keeping getting better every week and they have a very good defense.

5. West Virginia (8-1) - Will be tested the next two weeks against Cincy and UCONN.

6. Missouri (9-1) - Really improving the last few weeks. Can't over look Kansas but should put up big numbers this week against Kanasa State.

7. Arizona State (9-1) - Only loss was to Oreagon, can prove they're for real against USC.

8. Ohio State (10-1) - Loss at home against Illinois kills their championship hopes. This weeks season finale at Michigan could take them out of bowl contention.

9. Georgia (8-2) - Beat some really good teams this year. Kentucky this week.

10. USC (8-2) - With John David Booty back and Chauncey Washington getting his groove they're still in bowl contention.

11. Virginia Tech (8-2)

12. Texas (9-2)

13. Hawaii (10-0)

14. Clemson (8-2)

15. Florida (7-3)

NCAA Preseason Top 25

NCAA Preseason Top 25

After a long absence from the blog sportswithbrez is back up and running. I will be providing rankings for the NCAA, NBA, NFL and NHL. My poll for the Preseason top 25 is as follows:

1. Memphis - The Tigers are returning all their key players from last years Elite 8 team and are adding top rank Derrick Rose. Rose will be a key to Memphis making a deep run this year.

2. North Carolina - With Brandon Wright gone to the NBA the Heels lose a big part of their front court but Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington all returning, UNC will be competing for a National title.

3. UCLA - Darren Collison and Josh Shipp will be the leaders on this team but the key to this team's season may come from freshman Kevin Love.

4. Kansas - Mario Chalmers and Russel Robinson will guide the team through the first half of the season until junior Brandon Rush returns from his ACL injury in December. If he can return to form, lookout for the Jay Hawks.

5. Tennesse - The Vol's season will rely on last years SEC player of the year, sharp shooter Chris Loften. Loften averaged 20.8ppg last season and will be the focus of this years offense, as they look to rebound from last year's devestating loss to Ohio State in the tourney.

6. Georgetown - The best center in the NCAA this year will be the Hoyas Roy Hibbert, with Jeff Green now in the NBA Hibbert must assert himself more. DaJaun Summers will be looked to for replacing Green's scoring.

7. Louisville - The top seven scorers return to last years Big East runner up. Exciting guard Edgar Sosa and forward Terrence Williams should lead the Cards for a long run in this years tourney.

8. Indiana - D.J. White's decision to pass on the NBA gives the Hoosiers their leading scorer and team leader back. Freshman Eric Gordon will give the team a dynamic backcourt player they have wanted for years.

9. Washington State - They return 11 from last years team that made a surprising run to a 3 seed. Kyle Weaver is expected to lead this team even further this year. One thing about this team is that they will play as a team. No selfishness concerns here.

10. Marquette - Dominant guard Dominic James is back after pulling out of the draft just before the deadline giving Eagle fans everywhere hope. James, Jerel McNeal and Wesley Matthews with give them one of the best backcourts in college basketball.

Rounding out the rest of the top 25

11. Michigan State

12. Duke

13. Oregon

14. Arizona

15. USC

16. Gonzaga

17. Texas

18. Texas A&M

19. Kansas State

20. Stanford

21. Arkansas

22. Pittsburgh

23. Kentucky

24. NC State

Yanks acquire Abreu and Lidle from Phillies

The New York Yankees acquired All-Star right fielder Bobby Abreu and starting pitcher Cory Lidle from the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday for four minor league prospects.

The Yanks needed a productive bat with the likes of Hidecki Matsui, Gary Sheffield and Robinson Cano on the DL, as well as another starting pitcher. GM Brian Cashman killed two birds with one stone. Abreu will start in right field for the Yanks and will likely split time between there and DH when Sheffield gets healthy. As for Lidle he will become their number 5 starter in the rotation behind Johnson, Mussina, Wang and Wright.

The Phillies get left-hander Matt Smith and Class-A shortstop C.J. Henry -- a first-round draft pick in 2005. They also landed rookie league catcher Jesus Sanchez and right-hander Carlos Monasterios.

This trade will give the Yanks an amazing batting order down the stretch and into the play-offs. A potential line up of; Posada, Giambi, Cano, Jeter, A-Rod, Sheffield, Matsui, Damon and Abreu will be a very scary one for all opposing pitching staffs to face.

This trade could also signal the end of Gary Sheffield as a Yankee come seasons end. Shef will become a free agent where as they have a club option on the 31 year old Abreu which they will likely use.

NBA Playoffs Round 2
The second round of the NBA playoffs brings upon 3 possible classic series. The other series featuring the Detroit Pistons and the Clevland Cavaliers should be a complete white washing. LeBron James may be the best talent in basketball but that will not be near enough to compete with the Pistons. With the best starting five in the NBA, as well as McDyess and Hunter off the bench this will not be much of a series. This looks like it could be a four game sweep but I'm going to pick the Pistons in 5.

In the other Eastern Conference matchup we'll see the Miami Heat vs the New Jersey Nets. When analyzing this series you have to look right at the Heat's biggest deficiency, defending perimeter players. Well Miami fans look out because here comes the 3-headed monster of Jason Kidd, Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson. Is there any better guard combination in the league? How will the Heat contend with them? Dywane Wade and Gary Payton are fueding. James Posey and Udonis Haslem are constantly losing their heads. All common sense is pointing towards a Nets victory, right? Well I can't bet against the Shaq Diesel, as he looks to be coming into form. My picks is the Heat in 7.

Over to the Western Conference two 60 win teams will slug it out when the San Antonio Spurs battle the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavs have one of the biggest matchup problems in Dirk Nowitzki. The Spurs will counter Dirk with quite possibly the best defensive player in the game Bruce Bowen. On the other end of the floor it will come down to how the Mavs defend Tim Duncan. Duncan may have played hurt this year but it's playoff time and big Tim will take these games over. Spurs in 7.

In the final series it is the Los Angeles Clippers vs the Phoenix Suns. The Suns found their flow the last couple of games. While the Suns struggled in a seven game series with the Lakers, the Clippers made easy work with the Nuggets. Alot of people are picking the Suns to win. When looking at this one I feel that Elton Brand and Chris Kamen will wear down Shawn Marion and Boris Diaw. This will also tire them out on the offensive end. So the entire Suns offense will be up to league MVP, Steve Nash. He will be able to keep things close but I'm picking the Clipps in 7.

National Championship Preview

Tonight's NCAA National Championship game features the Florida Gators and the UCLA Bruins. The third seed Gators from the Minneapolis region are a 1.5 point favorites over the second seed Bruins from the Oakland region. I will now take a look at how the teams match up in this important showdown.

Backcourt: The Bruins backcourt is led by point guard Jordan Farmar along with Aaron Afflalo and Cedric Bozeman. The Gators guards are led by sharp shooter Lee Humphrey as well as Taurean Green and Corey Brewer. It will be interesting to see how coach Donovan decides to match up against the Bruins guards. Farmar and Afflalo are the biggest threats to score and make plays for others. I'm sure coach Donovan would love to put Humphrey and Brewer, his two best on ball defenders, on the Bruins duo but that would leave 6'0 Green to guard 6'6 Bozeman. As for UCLA guards playing defense on Florida, their main concern should be not to leave Humphrey alone as she showed against George Mason, that his shooting can take over a game.
Advantage: Even

Frontcourt: Joakim Noah and Al Horford give the Gators an impressive frontcourt. The Bruins counter with Ryan Hollins and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute. Moute was able to shut down LSU's Davis but will have a much tougher job when it comes to Noah or Horford. I personally think the decision of the night will be who coach Ben Howland will decide to put Moute on. He will likely put Moute on the physically stronger Horford and allow 7'0 Ryan Hollins to match up against Noah.
Advantage: Florida

Coaches: Billy Donovan and Ben Howland are both great coaches. Donovan has national championship experience as both a player and coach. This is Howlands first trip to the big dance.
Advantage: Even

Overall: UCLA looks to make the game extremely ugly where Florida loves to run the ball and keep the game at a nice flow. Whichever team gets to play their game will win this one. On their 12 game win streak UCLA as held 10 of those teams under 60 points. I do not see that happening tonight.
Florida Gators 74 - UCLA Bruins 67

Final Four MVP: Joakim Noah

NCAA Final Four 2006

The UCLA Bruins and Florida Gators are on a crash course Monday night in the National Championship. The final four occurred last night with two impressive performances by the Bruins and Gators. In the night's first action, Joakim Noah and Lee Humphrey led the Gators in smashing Cinderella's slipper. George Mason had a great run through this tournament and battled to keep it close in the first half. The Patriot's time ran out in the second half when Humphrey scored ten consecutive points to blow the game open.

In the aftermath of a 59-45 loss, LSU has filed a missing persons report in search of freshman forward Tyrus Thomas. UCLA, a team that usually uses defense to win games, put it all together last night in dismantling the Tigers. Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, a 6'7 215 lb forward, made 6'10 310 lb Glen "Big Baby" Davis look exactly as his nickname portrays him. Tyrus Thomas, the Atlanta region MVP, scored 5 points on just four field goal attempts.

This sets up a very intriguing match up on Monday night. It will be interesting to see how UCLA will deal with Florida bigmen Joakim Noah and Al Horford. On the other side of the ball, Florida will have to contend with UCLA's terrific guards Jordan Farmar and Aaron Afflalo. On Monday night, UCLA will be gunning for their record 12th NCAA title while Florida will be looking for their first. Let's hope this one turns out to be the classic it looks like on paper.

NCAA March Madness: Week 1
The first weekend of the NCAA tourny is in the books and what a fun four days it was. Like the tournament usually does, it provided us with a lot of excitement and upsets. The biggest upset of all coming in the Oakland region by the Bradley Braves.
Bradley pulled off a miraculous first round upset over the 4th ranked Kansas Jayhawks, then followed it up by out classing the 5th ranked Pitt Panthers. With that said if Bradley is the upset team of the tourny, then the Washington Bracket is the upset bracket. With the 7 seeded Wichita St. Shockers and the 11 seeded George Mason Patriots advancing to the sweet 16.

Heading into the second weekend action looks like this;
Atlanta Region:
1 Duke vs 4 LSU
2 Texas vs 6 West Virgina
Oakland Region:
1 Memphis vs 13 Bradley
2 UCLA vs 3 Gonzaga
Washington Region:
1 UCONN vs 5 Washington
7 Wichita St. vs 11 George Mason
Minneapolis Region:
1 Villinova vs 4 Boston College
3 Florida vs 7 Georgetown

Could this be the year that all four number one seeds make the final four? It's very possible but I wouldn't bet on it. With the play of Texas, UCLA and Florida and the lack of play from UCONN you never really know.

With all this great team play I am going to mention a few players who stood out this weekend other then the big stars like Redick, Williams, Morrison, Gay, Foye etc....
These are listed in order from Freshmen to seniors:
Josh McRoberts, Fr., Duke
Arron Afflalo, Soph., UCLA
Roy Hibbert, Soph., Georgetown
Patrick O'Bryant, Soph., Bradley
Sean Ogirri, Soph., Wichita St.
P.J. Couisnard, Soph., Wichita St.
Acie Law IV, Jr., Texas A&M
Marcellus Sommerville, Sr., Bradley
J.P. Batista, Sr., Gonzaga

And last but not least the player who most impressed me is sophmore Joakim Noah of Florida. This kid in two games went from virtual unknown to an almost sure lottery pick in this years draft. Noah Had two amazing games and finished the first weekend of the tourny averaging 16.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 6.5 assists, 4.5 blocks and 2.5 steals. Can he ever play!

NCAA Awards 05/06 cont'
With the conference tournaments finshed up it is time for my individual awards.

Coach of the Year : Bruce Pearl, Tenneesse
I know alot of people out there are making an arguement for Roy Williams (UNC) and Thad Matta (Ohio St.). Yes both coaches had great years with some young talent, but look at the job Pearl has done. He uses almost as many freshmen as Williams and his have much less talent, yet they have been ranked most of the year. Not an unamious decision but he's my pick.

Freshman of the Year : Tyler Hansbrough, North Carolina
Not a hard choice at all. Lead UNC in points and rebounds. Carried them to a season high rank of 10 at the end of the year. Also a 3 seed in the tourny. This team wasn't even suppose to be around at this time and he's the main reason.

Player of the Year: J.J. Redick, Duke

A strong case can be made for Adam Morrison of Gonzaga or even co-players of the year. I really considered going with the co winner root but ultimitely decided not to. I feel that Redick has to play against much stiffer competition night in night out, where Morrison plays against much weaker competition in the WCC. All their numbers have been pretty even but after weighing the stats and strength of schedule (Duke 2nd hardest in NCAA, Gonzaga 96th hardest in NCAA) I feel that I have made the correct choice in picking J.J. Redick as my National Player of the Year !

Wayne Middaugh Takes

Port Hawkesbury played home to the first Glam Slam of the year, The National, which saw 16 of the best curling teams from across the world play for for a total purse of $100,000. I enjoyed the tournament with ice side seating and experienced the best curling in the world today. Wayne Middaugh curled phenomenal on route to winning the triple knock out tournament with an 8-6 win over Saskachewan's Pat Simmons. This was a historic win for Middaugh as he became only the second curler to complete the Career Grand Slam with Kevin Martin being the other.

Quarter final action saw Middaugh defeating Stoughton 10-4, Simmons over Martin 8-3, Ferby over Gushue 9-5 and Howard winning over Trulsen 12-9. In the semis Middaugh defeated Howard 9-8 in an extra end and Simmons over Ferby 9-7.

It was great weekend of curling. Let's just hope that the tournament returns in the near future.

Great Game , Overpowering Team , $200 Down the Drain!!
One of the greatest games in baseball history happend Sunday night as the Houston Astros defeated the Atlanta Braves 7-6 in an 18 inning marathon which lasted just under 6 hours, making it the longest game ever.

The Astros will now move on to face the St. Louis Carinals who simply overpowered the San Diego Padres in a 3 game sweep. It is now set up for the NL's top offence to meet the leagues best pitching staff. One will have to give, who will it be?

Two Hundred Millon Dollars went down the drain Monday the New York Yankees lost in 5 to the Los Angles Angles. The collapes of the Yanks came in game 3 , with a 1-1 seris and the yanks best pitcher on the hill (Randy Johnson) they lost 7-3. For the "pitcherho will bring us a World Seris" Johnson looked more like an over the hill "bum" !! Old George won't be happy this off season , look for Johney Damon in pinestrips next season.

Bye Bye Red Sox : White Sox Sweep Defending Champs
"El Duque" Orlando Hernandez pitched out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam, and Paul Konerko hit a tiebreaking homer as Chicago beat Boston 5-3 Friday to sweep the defending World Series champs out of the playoffs and win a postseason series for the first time since Shoeless Joe Jackson's team won it all way back in 1917.

Freddy Garcia went 5+ innings to pick up the win and the series ender against the nuckle baller Tim Wakefield. Rookie closer Bobby Jenks picked up the save. But the real hero tonight was El Duque himself. After battling many injuries over the past few years he came on with the bases loaded and none out , and closed the door on the Red Sox hopes and dreams of a repeat!!

With the White Sox now able to rest and await the winner of the Yankees/Angels series they should be rested up for the LCS. Whoever they face will have a tough task ahead of them as the White Sox have a great offense to go with they best pitching rotation in the American League. A revamped Hernandez vodes well for the Sox as well , as he looked the best he has in a while.

More Baseball updates to come...
